Second Degree Undergraduate

Enrolled Hours

  • 6 hours is considered half time for financial aid purposes
  • 12 hours is considered full time for financial aid purposes

Aid Programs

Federal/State regulations do not allow second degree undergraduate students to receive grants including Pell Grant or MAP grant. Second degree undergraduates may be eligible to receive a Direct Student Loan, depending on the cumulative amount previously borrowed.   

Additional Information

  • Only undergraduate level classes are included in the calculation of your financial aid eligibility.
    • Example: If you are enrolled 6, 7, or 8 undergraduate hours, you are considered half time for financial aid calculation purposes. 
    • Example: If you are enrolled 9, 10, or 11 undergraduate hours, you are considered ¾ time for financial aid calculation purposes.   
    • Example: If you are enrolled 12 or more undergraduate hours, you are considered full time for financial aid calculation purposes. 
  • Maximum loan amounts (fall, spring, and summer, in that order) for one award year cannot exceed $5,500 for students classified as dependent, and $10,500 for students classified as independent. 
  • Second Degree undergraduates are classified as an independent if they meet one of the criteria listed in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current award year. Second degree undergraduate status does not automatically classify a student as independent.
