Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for Federal student financial aid, there are certain citizenship requirements you must meet if you are not a U.S. citizen. If you are an eligible non-citizen you must provide your Alien Registration number on the Federal financial aid application form (the FAFSA). You may be considered for Federal student financial aid. Please note the University’s Satisfactory Progress Policy applies to all students for federal and state financial aid eligibility. 

Generally, you are an eligible non-citizen if you are:

  • a U.S. permanent resident and you have an Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-551)
  • a conditional permanent resident (I-551C)
  • an other eligible non-citizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland Security showing any one of the following designations:
    • Refugee
    • Asylum Granted
    • Parole (I-94 confirms paroled for a minimum of one year and status has not expired)
    • Cuban-Haitian Entrant   

You are not eligible for Federal student financial aid if you have one of the following:

  • You are in the U.S. on an F1 or F2 student visa, or
  • You have a J1 or J2 exchange visitor visa, or
  • You have a G series visa (pertaining to international organizations) 

Enrolled Hours

  • 6 hours is considered half time for financial aid purposes
  • 12 hours is considered full time for financial aid purposes
