Parents

If you are the parent of a college-bound student, you are probably feeling a little overwhelmed about paying for a college education. You're not alone. The good news is that you can get help—all you have to do is ask (and fill out a FAFSA).

Financial aid is widely available to help families manage the cost of college, and anyone who might be concerned about paying should apply. Never assume you won't qualify, because there are options that are open to anyone (believe it or not, there are programs out there that almost everyone would be eligible for). It's free to apply, so you've got nothing to lose.

As a parent/family member of an Illinois State University student I have the right to do the following:

  • Ask and receive answers to general financial aid questions
  • Be treated in a positive manner with a high level of customer service
  • Talk with professional staff that have a vested interest in helping me and my student succeed at Illinois State University
  • Be concerned about how my student is managing their financial aid awards

As a parent/family member of an Illinois State University student I have a responsibility to do the following:

  • Make sure my student takes responsibility for meeting his or her financial aid deadlines
  • Help my student complete any and all forms requested by either the Department of Education or the Illinois State University Financial Aid Office
  • To help my student understand the responsibilities associated with receiving the different forms of financial aid
  • Ask tough questionsof my student about how they are managing their financial aid funds
  • Direct my student to the Financial Aid office for help whenever they feel that they are faced with financial aid issues that may require additional information and/or explanation
