Student Employment

While you're in college, there are a variety of options for you to work not only to help finance your education, but to earn a little extra spending money on the side.

Make your job search as easy as possible – visit our online employment search to explore the different opportunities we have available.

Off-campus Employment

Our Job Location and Development *(JLD) Office locates and develops off-campus, part-time job opportunities in Bloomington-Normal for currently enrolled students. These jobs must be suitable to the scheduling and other needs of the student and, to the maximum extent possible, must complement and reinforce the educational program or vocational goals of the student. Interviewing and hiring is done by employers in accordance with their own needs and hiring practices. Students receive paychecks from their employers rather than Illinois State University.

Let us help you connect with off-campus employers. Visit our office located in Fell Hall 260 or contact us at (309) 438-2237 or by email at

Federal Work Study

What is Federal Work-Study (FWS)? FWS is a need-based financial aid award that provides students assistance with meeting educational expenses through meaningful employment.

Why do you want to receive Federal Work-Study?

  • Unlike other forms of employment, wages from the FWS Program can be reported as “need-based” wages on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and these earnings are then excluded in the calculation for financial need for the following academic year.
  • Some departments on campus and non-profit organizations off-campus can only hire FWS students due to limited budgets. The funding from the FWS Program allows the department or organization to hire three students at the cost of one non-FWS student.

How do you qualify for FWS?

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
    • FWS funding is limited and awarded first to students who apply by March 1
    • You must indicate on the FAFSA that you are interested in work-study
    • FWS is awarded to students with the lowest Estimated Family Contribution (EFC)
  2. Enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduates, 5 credit hours per semester for graduates.

Other importation information

  • You earn FWS as you work hours. FWS does not credit directly to your university charges. You are paid every two weeks by paycheck. Direct deposit to your personal bank accounts is available through the Payroll Office, located in Hovey Hall 101.
  • You must work an average of 10-11 hours per week to earn your full FWS award.
  • Once you have earned your full award, you may only continue working if your supervisor transfers you from FWS payroll to regular payroll by notifying the Payroll Office.
  • Your FWS award is only valid for the current academic year. You must reapply each year by filing the appropriate FAFSA for the appropriate year.
