If you served in the Armed Forces for at least one year and did not receive a dishonorable discharge, you may qualify for the Illinois Veteran Grant. In addition to residing in Illinois for at least six months before entering the service, you must return to Illinois within six months after your discharge.
You may obtain your one-time application from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission at (800) 899-ISAC (4722), or from the Financial Aid Office. You must meet the application deadline and provide a copy of your DD 214 to ISAC with your application. In addition, you must submit a copy of your DD 214 to both the Financial Aid Office and the Veterans' Affairs Office at Illinois State.
When your application is determined "eligible" by ISAC, they will send an eligibility letter to you. A clear photo copy of the ISAC letter must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office in order for the grant to become active. IVG will credit your tuition charges as well as partial fee charges.
If you are MAP eligible, you may want to use all of a MAP grant before applying for IVG. The MAP is for undergraduates only. The IVG can be used for undergrad as well as grad classes. After you have used all of the MAP grant possible, you could then start the process to apply for the IVG. However, once you apply for the IVG, you cannot ask for the MAP grant to be used instead of the IVG.
